How Skip Permits Work in Haringey

If you want to place a skip on a public road or highway in Haringey, you must obtain a skip / building-materials licence from the Council. If the skip is placed entirely on private land (driveway, garden, private site) then you do not need a council licence for that placement. Below is the full process and key rules.

Hire a Haringey Skip

1. Who Applies for the Permit?

  • The skip hire company (or operator) must apply for the licence to place a skip or building materials on the public highway in Haringey.
  • The person booking the skip must ensure that:
    • They choose a properly licensed/registered skip operator
    • The licence is approved before the skip is placed on the road
2. How Long Does a Permit Last?

  • The licence is valid for a maximum period of 28 days in Haringey. If you need a placement beyond 28 days, a new application is required.
  • It covers the skip (and/or building materials) for the period stated in the licence.
3. How Much Does the Permit Cost?

4. Where Can You Put the Skip?

  • If the skip is on the public highway/roadway, a licence is required.
  • If the skip is placed entirely on private land (your driveway/garden/private site), then you do not need the highway licence.
  • If the skip will occupy a parking bay or a controlled parking space, you may need a separate parking bay suspension or similar arrangement.
5. Safety Requirements

  • The skip must be clearly labelled with the owner/operator’s name and contact number.
  • It must be lit during hours of darkness.
  • It must not be larger than 5 metres by 2 metres when placed on the highway.
  • It must be covered when unattended (to prevent unauthorised dumping) and must be removed as soon as reasonably practical after being filled or the licence period ends.
  • The skip must not be placed on the pavement rather than the carriageway and must allow adequate drainage through the adjacent gully/unobstructed.
6. Permit Enforcement

  • Placing a skip on the public highway without a valid licence in Haringey is subject to enforcement, including possible prosecution.
  • The Council may inspect the location and hold the skip operator responsible for damage to the highway, lighting failures, or other breach of licence conditions.
7. How Long Does Approval Take?

  • The application must be submitted at least 5 working days before the skip is placed on the road.
  • If a site inspection or parking bay suspension is required, you should allow more time.
8. How the Process Usually Works for You

  1. You book a skip with a licensed skip-hire company in Haringey.
  2. Inform them that the skip will be placed on the public road/highway (if that is your plan).
  3. The skip hire company:
    • Applies to Haringey Council for the skip/building materials licence
    • If needed, arranges a parking bay suspension or other permission
    • Pays the required fee
    • Waits for approval/licence to be issued
  4. Once the licence is approved, the skip is delivered to the location.
  5. You fill the skip, ensuring you comply with permitted materials and safe operation.
  6. The skip hire company collects the skip before the licence period ends (or may apply for a new licence if needed).
