How Skip Permits Work in Islington

If you want to place a skip on a public road or highway in Islington, you must obtain a skip licence from the Council.
If the skip is placed entirely on private land (driveway, garden, building site), you do not need a permit/licence from the council.

Below is the full process and key rules.

1. Who Applies for the Permit?

  • The skip hire company (or operator) must apply for the skip licence.
  • The person booking the skip is responsible for choosing a properly licensed skip operator and ensuring the licence is approved before the skip is delivered.
  • On Islington’s website: you can only apply if you’re a company holding a waste-carrier licence and at least £10 million public liability insurance.
2. How Long Does a Permit Last?

  • Skip Permits last 28 days
3. How Much Does the Permit Cost?

  • The charge is £142 per 28 days for the licence.
  • Additional charges when placing the skip in a parking bay in a restricted zone:
    • Daily suspension for a parking bay: £72.80 per day.
    • Day One – £177.80 (unlimited Bays), Day two – £67.20
    • Also there is a “short notice permit” option: £112 per day for a parking bay if you don’t use the longer suspension.
    • The standard “Skip Licence” fee is £142 for 28 Days

    All prices exclude VAT

4. Where Can You Put the Skip?

  • If the skip is placed on public highway (roadway / parking bay / single yellow line) you must have a skip licence (and where needed a parking-bay suspension).
  • If the skip is on private land (driveway, garden, private site) you do not require a council licence.
  • There are certain roads in Islington where skip placements are restricted (e.g., near stadiums, market days, red-routes) — you’ll need to check the published list of “Traffic Sensitive Roads – Skip Restrictions”.
5. Safety Requirements

  • The skip operator must ensure safe siting of the skip, especially on the highway: proper lighting at night, cones/barriers if needed, not obstructing access. (General legal expectation under The Highways Act)
  • The applicant must ensure the skip is not overfilled, is level, and does not pose hazard to pedestrians or traffic.
6. Permit Enforcement

  • If you place a skip on the highway without having the relevant licence (or suspension for parking bay) in Islington, you can be subject to enforcement action, including fines and removal.
  • The Council publishes non-compliance charge details. For example, failure to apply may lead to the higher fee or penalties.
7. How Long Does Approval Take?

  • The licence application time according to Islington’s site: about 5 working days to process.
  • For best results, apply well in advance of the skip delivery date, especially if bay suspension is required.
  • For skips Parked in Bays – 14 Full days + 4 working days renewal
8. How the Process Usually Works for You

  1. You book a skip with a licensed skip-hire company in Islington.
  2. Inform them that the skip is to be placed on the public road (if applicable).
  3. The skip hire company:
    • Applies to Islington Council for the skip licence
    • If needed, arranges the parking bay suspension (and pays associated fees)
    • Waits for approval/licence to be issued
  4. Once approved, the skip is delivered to the correct location.
  5. You fill the skip, only with permissible materials and operate within the licence duration.
  6. The skip is collected before the licence expires (or extended if needed and approved).
