Sadiq Khan: ‘London needs to reduce, reuse and recycle more’
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, recently published the draft environment strategy, which focuses on improving the environment and green spaces, air pollution, recycling and responsible waste management.
The strategy sets out various targets, including minimising the amount of waste which goes to landfill and improving waste collections. One target is for no recyclable waste to be sent to landfill by 2026.
Local London authorities are expected to meet other targets, including reaching a 65% municipal recycling rate by 2030.
Councils are also required to ensure at least a 50% household recycling rate from 2025.
For local councils to achieve this, it is argued there needs to be a unified approach to waste collection to make it easier for householders to know what can be recycled and what can't. Without a consistent approach across the capital as a whole, it may be harder to meet such targets.
The Mayor said: "London needs to reduce, reuse and recycle more, to see waste as the valuable resource that it is and to reduce London’s increasing waste bill as the city grows".
However, it is still not required of businesses, large and small, to recycle. This should be changed to help minimise the amount of recyclable waste going to landfill.
