New technology: the changing face of the construction sector
Change is coming, and it's coming to the construction sector as it's claimed a 'skills revolution' will transform the industry within a few decades.
A new report from consultancy and construction company Mace, entitled Moving to Industry 4.0, anticipates our entry into a 'fourth industrial age' which will transform the construction sector and bring with it the need to retrain thousands of workers.
Mace talks about a 'new industrial revolution' as a result of new technologies being adopted and absorbed into the construction industry.
The report also touches on the UK construction sector's poor productivity levels, and suggests if productivity levels improved, this could contribute an extra £25 billion annually to the UK economy by 2040.
Improving productivity would also boost house building and infrastructure development, helping to ensure that projects are delivered on time and to budget.
However, in order to close the productivity gap and benefit from 'productivity-improving technologies', Mace warns that the industry must keep up with technological change, retrain the current workforce and make sure the industry attracts new workers who have strong tech skills.
With Brexit, and the debate over the rights of EU workers to remain in the UK following its departure from the EU still up in the air, the construction industry's skills shortage could get worse unless the issue is addressed.
