Proskips Skip Information

Why ProSkips?

Based in South West London, but offering a nationwide service through a network of hire partners, ProSkips provide skip hire services to a wide range of private customers and businesses.
Although skip hire may sound like an easy thing to do, it’s key to know what you can and cannot put in a skip. Plus, of course, many hirers need a licence. Also, what size skip do you need? How do you arrange for the skip to be collected? How long can you keep it for? These are all questions that need to be answered.

What can I put in a skip?

Skips can be used to remove almost any type of rubbish or waste material. But there are certain items that cannot disposed of in a skip. These include:

  • Liquids
  • Oil, petrol, diesel
  • Paint and cans of paint
  • Fluorescent tubes
  • Gas canisters and gas bottles
  • Asbestos
  • Electrical appliances and equipment
  • Batteries
  • Tyres
  • TVs and computer screens
  • Fridges, freezers and air conditioning units
  • Hardcore
  • Plasterboard
  • Hazardous and toxic materials
  • Clinical or medical waste, including syringes

The other rule covering waste management and skip hire is that a skip cannot be overfilled. It must be a level load. Skips have fill levels for a reason – we’re legally bound to not carry unsafe loads.

The law prevents us from taking away a skip when the waste you’ve filled it with is poking out above the sides above the fill level.

What size skip do I need?

We have a range of skip sizes, from 4 yards (which holds about 15 bin bags) to 16 yards. They are known in yards because this indicates the number of cubic yards of waste material each skip size will hold.

Do I need a permit for my ProSkip?

Not if the skip you hire will fit on your private land. However, you will need a skip permit if it is going to be placed on public land (usually the road).
The permit process, costs and regulations vary from county to county, and in London from borough to borough. Some state that only the hirer can apply for the permit, and others that only the skip supplier can apply.

To find out more, the DirectGov website has some useful advice about skip permits and how to apply online for a skip permit.

How long can I keep my skip?

Most of our residential customers require a skip for about two weeks, but the time period can be negotiated to suit your needs when ordering your skip. If you have a permit you must remember to adhere to its regulations.

We also offer a wait and load service in which we arrive with your skip to be filled immediately and once it’s loaded we take it away directly. The advantage of this service is does not require a permit. For more information about our same-day hire and collection service or any other skip hire query, give us a call.
