Common questions when hiring a skip
We are always happy to answer questions, here are some examples of frequently asked questions.
What can I put in a skip?
Skips can be used to remove almost any type of rubbish or waste material, but there are certain items that cannot be disposed of in a skip. These include:
|
|
The other rule covering waste management and skip hire is that a skip cannot be overfilled. It must be a level load. Skips have fill levels for a reason – we’re legally bound not to carry unsafe loads.
The law prevents us from taking away a skip when the waste you’ve filled it with is poking out above the sides above the fill level.

Proskips covers all 32 London boroughs
Proskips uses its network of skip hire partners to provide unrivalled coverage of London’s 32 boroughs, from Barking & Dagenham to Westminster.
You do not need a permit to place a skip on private property as long as you have the landowner’s permission. If the skip needs to be placed on a public site, such as a public highway, a skip permit must be applied for.
Section 139 of the Highways Act 1980 requires anyone placing a skip on a public road to obtain a licence or permit from their local authority. However, many London councils say that the skip provider must apply for any permit needed. For a small charge, Prowaste can organise a skip permit for you but please be aware that we can only work as fast as the council who will be issuing it. The cost of the skip permit will vary depending on the size of the skip and your location.

What size skip do I need?
We have a range of skip sizes, from 4 yards (which holds about 15 bin bags) to 16 yards. They are known in yards because this indicates the number of cubic yards of waste material each skip size will hold.
This large skip is 4.3m long, 1.75m wide and 2m high. It can hold up to 50 bin bags

Do I need a permit for my ProSkip?
Not if the skip you hire will fit on your private land. However, you will need a skip permit if it is going to be placed on public land (usually the road).
The permit process, costs and regulations vary from county to county, and in London from borough to borough. Some state that only the hirer can apply for the permit, and others that only the skip supplier can apply.
