Tips & Advice

What are the costs of hiring a skip for a household building project?

From Wandsworth to Wimbledon, Streatham to Sutton and Clapham to Croydon, you don’t need to go far in south west London to see evidence of domestic building projects – and the skips to prove it.

As residents transform their London homes, with the loft conversions, kitchen extensions and garden makeovers that add value and all-important living space, huge quantities waste are generated daily. Skips, often bursting at the seams, have become part-and-parcel of average London streetscape.

If you’re thinking of doing a renovation project, whether installing a state-of-the art kitchen, knocking down a wall to boost your light and space or transforming a garden, you’re going to create a lot of building waste. So, you need to start thinking about skip hire.

What size skip will I need?

While planning your budget, it’s important to factor in skip hire costs. Where you live and the work you’re planning, will determine the size of skip you are likely to need, and therefore the price you will pay.

At Proskips we can offer you advice on getting the right skip to complete your renovation job. And it needn’t cost the earth.

Should I recycle items, or just put it all in the skip?

You can save money on skip hire, and help the environment, by thinking carefully about whether the items you’re discarding could be recycled. Placing items in your skip that could be disposed of elsewhere, can increase the weight and therefore the cost. Instead, take them to your local council recycling centre (tip).

Think too before adding old furniture or fixtures and fittings, such as kitchen cabinets. Could you donate them to a charity or sell them on eBay or at a car boot sale instead?  The more items you are able to recycle, the more space within the skip for other waste.

What about permits?

You also need to factor in any fees for skip hire permits and parking suspensions. Placing a skip on the public road will require a licence; fees will be set by your council.  You aren’t allowed to put a skip on the pavement, regardless of its size.

If the skip is going to be on private land, with the landowner’s permission, you will not require a permit – this means that if you’re using a private drive or garden for your skip there is no charge.

If your road has parking restrictions in place, you will need to make additional arrangements for a parking suspension – again, you’ll need to check with your local council for advice.

In many cases, your skip hire company will obtain the skip licence for you, but in some areas, you may need to do this yourself – so make sure you check well in advance. Find out more on the gov.uk website.

How long can I keep a skip?

You can keep a Proskip for up to two weeks, but if you want to load up the skip and have it removed the same day, that can also be arranged.
